Abstract
Airway immune cells play a protective role during influenza virus infection. We have shown they do this by potently blocking seasonal influenza virus growth, but not the growth of highly pathogenic strains. This may contribute to severe disease. This project will reveal how airway immune cells control the severity of influenza infection. The findings will provide a platform to develop innovative therapeutic strategies to limit the impact of severe influenza virus disease during future pandemics.
